A little preparation helps your test go smoothly and gives accurate results. Always follow the specific instructions from your doctor or the lab.

Do I need to fast?

Only some tests need fasting — for example, certain blood sugar or cholesterol tests. When fasting is needed, it is often for 8 to 12 hours, and you can usually drink plain water. Ask the lab or your doctor whether your test needs fasting, and for how long.

Before a blood test

  • Bring the doctor's prescription or test request and any previous reports
  • Drink water (unless told otherwise) — it makes blood collection easier
  • Wear a top with sleeves that roll up easily
  • Keep taking your regular medicines unless your doctor tells you not to

Helping children through a blood test

  • Explain simply and honestly what will happen
  • Hold your child on your lap and bring a favourite toy
  • Praise them afterwards

Urine and stool samples

  • Use the clean container provided by the lab
  • For urine, collect a mid-stream sample unless told otherwise
  • For stool, avoid mixing the sample with urine or water
  • Return the sample to the lab as soon as possible
